Who doesn't love the idea of traveling and philanthropy?! Many people like to give-back to others through donations, charity events, "fun-runs" for charity, etc.

My nephew recently asked me to donate to his school fundraiser, which I did being the great Auntie that I am, but that got me thinking...

Many people have various charity organizations they support and are looking for different, unique ways to raise funds AND many people travel. Wouldn't it be great to combine the two? Therefore, you could have your well-deserved and earned vacation, while helping out the charitable organization(s) you support!

Good news - this is possible!

Cruise lines love groups! And, if groups book more than 8 staterooms on a cruise, many times they have the opportunity for some great amenities offered to the group booking. These amenities can include, but not limited to, group cocktail receptions, free meeting space, on board credit, special coupons and even the option for an agreed to dollar amount per stateroom booked offered back to the charity by the cruise line. Generally this amount can be $25-$100 per stateroom booked.

Every cruise line, sailing and ship offer different amenities generally dependant on demand for a particular cruise. The less demand the more amenities.

In addition, the group also is provided what is called a "Tour Conductor" credit or "TC" for short. Now, again, policies for this depend on the cruise line, ship and sail date. But in general TC credits are seen in one of the following manners:

  • Someone in the group, usually the group leader, cruises for free.
  • The TC credit can purchase additional amenities, as described above.
  • The TC credit can lower the cost of the cruise for the entire group.
  • The TC credit can allow your travel consultant to personally escort your group to handle all the details while on board the ship, freeing up the group leader to relax and enjoy the cruise.

In addition, if you work with a travel consultant, like me (smile); I can also help increase those fundraising dollars through these 3 ways:

1.  I can assist you in setting a "mark up" to the actual cruise fare for each passenger booking and those "mark-ups" are donated direct to the organization. No commission, no fees.

2.  I can help you convert the value of the tour conductor(s) credit into cash which can go directly back to the organization. (Some limitations apply depending on cruise line and sail date.)

3.  I can work with you on matching the cruise lines' donated flat dollar per stateroom booked going back to the charity; doubling the donation amount per stateroom.

Following is an example of how this all might look (all details below used for example purposes ONLY):

  • 7-night cruise
  • Cost - $1,000/person
  • Number of staterooms booked - 20
  • Cruise line flat $ amenity per stateroom booked - $75
  • Cruise Planners flat $ matching amenity per stateroom booked - $75
  • Mark-up agreed to per stateroom is $200
  • Amount of TC's earned - 2 (based on 1 TC per 8 staterooms )

(20) staterooms x $200 mark-up pricing added = $ 4,000

(20) staterooms x $75 per stateroom cruise amenity /stateroom = $1,500

(20) staterooms x $75 Cruise Planners matching amenity/stateroom  = $1,500

(2) Tour Conductor credits converted to cash x $1,000 = $2,000

TOTAL = $9,000

A like-minded group of travelers receive a well deserved and fun vacation
while raising $9,000 for their favorite charitable organization.

And the fundraising numbers will just keep increasing the more individuals travel with the group!
